Benjamin Francis: Building a Global Fitness Empire from Scratch

Benjamin Francis is a British entrepreneur and co-founder of the sportswear brand Gymshark, a testament to ambition, hard work, and innovative thinking. Born in 1992 in the West Midlands, Francis was raised in Bromsgrove, Worcestershire, and attended South Bromsgrove High School. His early interest in computing and various business ventures, including an online car number plate company, showcased his entrepreneurial potential. His passion for fitness and the discipline he gained in the gym would ultimately lead him to create one of the world's leading fitness apparel brands.
Francis began visiting the gym regularly as a teenager, finding structure and consistency, which spilled over into other parts of his life. In 2010, he enrolled at Aston University to study international business and management, providing a platform for establishing his own business. During this time, he worked as a delivery driver for Pizza Hut, earning £5 per hour while experimenting with developing apps. He designed two fitness applications: Fat Loss Abs Guide and iPhysique. Soon, however, he began focusing on something larger.
In 2012, at just 19 years old, Francis launched Gymshark from his parents' garage with his school friend Lewis Morgan. Initially, the company focused on selling fitness supplements through dropshipping, but profits were modest. When supplement distribution proved challenging, Francis pivoted to fitness apparel, a decision that would define Gymshark's future. Armed with a sewing machine and screen printer, and having saved £1,000 of his own money, he began designing and manufacturing the products himself, even learning to sew thanks to his grandmother.
The turning point for Gymshark came in 2013 when Francis showcased the brand's products at the BodyPower fitness trade show in Birmingham. A tracksuit went viral on Facebook shortly afterward, generating £30,000 in sales in just 30 minutes. Recognizing the brand's potential, Francis dropped out of university and quit his job at Pizza Hut to dedicate himself fully to Gymshark. This marked the beginning of an extraordinary rise.
Francis leveraged social media in ways that no other brand had at the time, associating his products with social fitness influencers and bodybuilders who dominated the fitness scene. This strategy created significant engagement and helped Gymshark tap into a loyal audience. The brand led the way in influencer marketing, propelling it into the global spotlight.
As the company grew, so did Francis' understanding of his own strengths and weaknesses. In 2015, he made the bold decision to step down as CEO, assuming roles focused on marketing, branding, and product development. He believed this move would accelerate the company’s growth while allowing him to evolve as a leader. This decision paid off, with Gymshark becoming one of the fastest-growing private companies in the UK.
By 2020, Gymshark had become a global fitness brand, selling products in 131 countries. That year, the company secured a deal with US private equity firm General Atlantic, which purchased a 21% stake, valuing Gymshark at over £1 billion. Francis, who retained a majority ownership of over 70%, became one of the youngest entrepreneurs to lead a British company to unicorn status.
In 2021, Francis returned as Gymshark's CEO, taking the company into its next phase of growth. Under his leadership, the brand continued to innovate, opening a branded gym and innovation hub while expanding its global reach. His efforts earned him widespread recognition, including a spot on Forbes' 30 Under 30 list and the EY UK Entrepreneur of the Year Award. In 2023, he was recognized for his contributions to the business sector with an appointment as a Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE).
Despite his remarkable success, Francis remains down-to-earth. A car and motorcycle enthusiast and an avid Aston Villa supporter, he balances his professional and personal life with ease. He married fitness influencer Robin Gallant in 2021, and the couple welcomed twin sons in December 2022, with another baby on the way.
Benjamin Francis is a true embodiment of tenacity, adaptability, and vision. From sewing in his parents' garage to leading a billion-dollar global brand, he has transformed the fitness apparel industry and inspired a new generation of entrepreneurs to pursue their dreams with tireless determination.
